SPF 30 vs. SPF 50: SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, and SPF 50 about 98%. For most everyday days, SPF 30 is enough if you apply it properly. Choose SPF 50 for long outdoor days, beaches, and treks, or if you burn easily or tend to apply too little. Either way, pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
What Does SPF Actually Measure?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It shows how well a sunscreen protects your skin from sunburn.
- SPF mainly describes UVB protection. One of the main causes of sunburn is UVB. The amount of UVA protection a product offers is not indicated by its SPF number alone.
- Broad-spectrum protection covers UVA and UVB. Check this separately instead of assuming that a higher SPF automatically improves both.
- SPF is not a countdown. SPF 30 does not mean 300 minutes of protection. Sun intensity, application amount, and activity affect your actual exposure.
- More SPF does not mean fewer top-ups. A higher number cannot prevent sunscreen from washing off or rubbing away.
The FDA says the same: SPF is about how much sun exposure a sunscreen protects against, not how long you can stay in the sun.

SPF 30 vs SPF 50 vs SPF 70: The Real Difference
SPF 30, SPF 50, and SPF 70 offer different levels of UVB protection. The table below shows approximate protection under test conditions. In everyday use, protection also depends on how much sunscreen you apply, whether you miss any areas, and when you reapply.

Does the small difference matter? Under test conditions, SPF 30 lets through about 3.3% of UVB radiation, while SPF 50 lets through about 2%. This means SPF 50 allows roughly 40% less UVB through in this comparison. It does not mean a 40% lower risk of tanning or skin cancer.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Higher SPFs block slightly more UVB, but no sunscreen blocks it all.

How Much Sunscreen Should You Apply?
Most people use too little sunscreen, so the amount you apply matters as much as the SPF number. The AAD says most adults need about 1 ounce (a shot glass full) for the whole body. For the face, use at least 1 teaspoon. Reapply roughly every two hours, as well as after perspiring or swimming.
So, Which One Do You Need?
Think about the day you are preparing for. A short commute and an afternoon watching an outdoor cricket match create different sun-protection needs.
Daily Commute and Office Days: Is SPF 30 Enough?
- SPF 30 is a reasonable baseline. Choose broad-spectrum protection and apply it properly to exposed skin.
- SPF 50 is also suitable for everyday use. You do not need to reserve it for holidays if you prefer the formula.
- Consider your actual exposure. Walking to work, outdoor lunch breaks, and driving can make an apparently indoor day less sheltered than it sounds.
- Build a routine you can maintain. Keep sunscreen where you get ready and carry it when your plans include time outside.
Beach, Trek, and Long Outdoor Days: Why Consider SPF 50?
- The higher rating provides an extra margin. It remains important to apply a generous, even layer.
- Choose water resistance for swimming or sweating. Follow the duration and reapplication directions printed on the product.
- Plan protection beyond sunscreen. Shade, a broad-brimmed hat, and covering clothing help reduce exposure.
- Do not extend your time outside because of the SPF. Higher SPF is not permission to stay in strong sunlight indefinitely.
These choices follow the AAD's sun-protection guidance: combine sunscreen with shade and protective clothing.
SPF 30 vs. SPF 50 for Indian Skin
Deeper skin tones can still tan and get dark spots, so everyone needs sunscreen. The SPF number is only one part of it. Pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen you will actually use every day. If mineral sunscreens leave a white cast on your skin, try a tinted one.

Sunscreens to Consider at Dermatics
Dermatics India lists well over 100 sunscreens, which is a lot to scroll through. Here are five that match the situations above. Each one is a gel or light formula, so it is easy to wear every day. Pack sizes and stock change, so check each product page for the latest.

IPCA Acne-UV Silicone Sunscreen Gel SPF 30 PA+++
A light, oil-free gel for commutes, office days, and anyone who dislikes a heavy feel.
- Why it works: It is an oil-free, non-comedogenic silicone gel with a matte finish. It combines titanium dioxide with modern UVA/UVB filters, and the PA+++ rating covers UVA.
- Good under makeup: The gel sits lightly, so it suits a busy morning routine.
- Keep in mind: It mixes mineral and chemical filters. If your skin reacts to chemical filters, pick a fully mineral formula. Patch-test first.

UV Tec Tinted Physical Sunscreen
A mineral, tinted option for people who dislike the chalky look of regular mineral sunscreens.
- Why it works: Titanium dioxide gives mineral UV protection. Iron oxides add a sheer tint and help against visible light, which is linked to dark spots. Hyaluronic acid and ceramides help your skin stay comfortable.
- Good for everyday use: The tint softens the white cast that mineral sunscreens often leave.
- Keep in mind: A tint works best when it matches your tone, so test it on your jawline in daylight. SPF 30+ is on the label, so check the pack for its PA rating too.

Solasafe Sportz Sunscreen Gel SPF 50+ PA+++
Built for long hours outside, with sweat and heat.
- Why it works: A high 25% zinc oxide content gives broad physical cover. It is a matte, sweat- and water-resistant gel, which makes it easier to wear when you are active.
- Strong UVA rating: PA+++ covers UVA, the rays behind aging and dark spots.
- Keep in mind: Water-resistant does not mean waterproof. Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming. Mineral formulas can show a faint cast on deeper skin, so try a small area first.

Sunheal Ultra Matte Gel Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++
A shine-control gel for humid days and oily T-zones.
- Why it works: It has an ultra-matte finish and an oil-free feel. PA++++ is the highest UVA rating on a standard label.
- Water- and sweat-resistant: It stays put better in Indian summers.
- Keep in mind: It is very matte. If your cheeks run dry, smooth on a light moisturizer first. It also uses chemical filters alongside titanium dioxide, so patch test.

La Shield Fisico Matte SPF 50 Sunscreen Gel
A mineral gel for skin that reacts to many sunscreens.
- Why it works: Zinc oxide acts as a mineral filter on top of the skin. It has a matte texture, no scent, and is non-comedogenic.
- Good for outdoor days: It is water- and sweat-resistant.
- Keep in mind: Mineral gels can leave a light cast on deeper skin tones. If that bothers you, a tinted mineral option such as UV Tec above may suit you better.

Conclusion
SPF 30 is enough for most everyday days. SPF 50 gives a little extra UVB protection for long hours outdoors, on beaches, and on treks. Whichever you pick, choose broad-spectrum, apply enough, and reapply every 2 hours when outdoors. If dark spots bother you or you can’t find a sunscreen that suits your skin, book an online skin consultation with Dermatics.
